The Inukshuk – the 1st coin
The first coin in the O Canada series features an Inukshuk in raised relief and framed against icy mountains and a frigid, frozen sea. Look closely at the background and you’ll see the Aurora Borealis illuminating the northern sky in a dazzling display of shimmering light. A hallmark of the O Canada series, the central image is set between two semi-circular bands — each one laser polished to a gleaming, mirror-like finish – with the top band proudly displaying the word “Canada” in raised and embossed relief.

The Beaver – the 2nd coin
This coin pays tribute to the beaver and its tireless work ethic. In raised relief you’ll actually be able to feel if you run your fingers over the coin, the main image captures a beaver hard at work securing a tree for its lodge. Engraved with intricate detail, twigs, wood chips and bark lie strewn at the beaver’s webbed feet as it uses its paddle-shaped tail to steady itself on its hind quarter. Notice the small icon embossed on the left side of the coin. This is a signature design feature on every coin in the series – as is the word ‘Canada’ embossed in raised relief and set against a semi-circular band, each one laser polished to a gleaming, mirror-like finish.

The Polar Bear – the 4th coin
This beautiful ½ ounce pure silver coin captures this remarkable mammal as it waits patiently on the edge of an ice flow for the exact moment to strike and seize its prey. Crafted with meticulous attention to quality, you’ll be amazed at how much detail is revealed in the engraved raised relief depicting the bear’s fur coat and the water’s edge. Subscribe to the O Canada series now to get this coin when it is released in April 2013.

The Coloured Maple Leaf – the 11th coin
Perhaps the most unique coin in the O Canada series, the Coloured Maple Leaf incorporates a stunning blend of painting technology and traditional coin engraving. Resplendent in brilliant fall colours, the main image features three maple leaves bundled together in an informal bouquet and offered as a gift – or is it being received as one? You decide. As is consistent with every coin in the O Canada series, a signature icon is embossed at the left edge and the word ‘Canada’ is proudly displayed in raised relief against a laser-polished mirror-like finish. Subscribe now to accept delivery of this coin in November 2013 and enjoy the subscriber-only price of $39.95 — a savings of $15 off the regular retail price.

The Inukshuk – the 1st coin

“A welcome sign” – about this coin
In the Inuit language, the word “Inukshuk” means ‘in the likeness of a human’ and is a powerful symbol of survival, family and community. Dotting our vast northern lands, Inukshuks (also known as Inuksuks) can take different forms for specific purposes such as ways to mark fertile fishing and hunting areas, traditional animal migration routes or as a welcome sign that says “You are on the right path” to a lonely traveler on an otherwise featureless and forbidding arctic landscape.

The Beaver – the 2nd coin

“The eager beaver” – about this coin
Often called ‘Nature’s engineers’, beavers are famous for their ability to fell trees with precision and build elaborate domelike ‘lodges’ to live in. Working mainly at night, and using their powerful jaws packed with sharp incisor teeth, beavers gnaw and gather trees, logs and branches to create their distinctive homes that rise out of rock and mud areas in lakes, streams and river deltas.

The Polar Bear – the 4th coin

“Ready to strike” – about this coin
Making its home in northern Manitoba, across the Arctic Circle – and even in parts of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Polar Bear is renowned for its fearsome power, enduring strength and surprising grace. Two times larger than the Siberian Tiger – and capable of equally fierce behavior – the Polar Bear is the world’s largest terrestrial carnivore, weighing as much as 680 kilograms and standing up to 3 meters tall!

The Coloured Maple Leaf – the 11th coin

“Ours to cherish” – about the design
Arguably the most enduring symbol of Canada, the Maple Leaf has long been a recognized emblem – first adopted by the settlers of New France along the St. Lawrence River at the beginning of the 18th century. In 1868, it was included in the coat of arms for both Ontario and Quebec and first appeared on the Canadian coat of arms in 1921. With the formal introduction of the Canadian flag in 1965, the maple leaf finally became our central national symbol.
